Repeat in the same form

Performance installation

Duration: 60-90 minutes

Heartland Festival 2023

The installation features a 7 cm deep water mirror, where three metal stands are placed, carrying 3 enlarged shells and soap sculptures. Each shell serves as a vessel for one of the three performers. The performance is a continuous ritual action throughout the festival. The ritual is based on three fundamental elements:

1. An element that connects (water) 2. An intimate encounter (between the festival guest and the performer) 3. A repetitive action with an object (the soap sculpture)

During the performance, the three performers wash the hands of the festival guest’s. At each vessel, microphones are installed on each side, capturing the washing session, which both the guests and performers hear live through headphones. The sound connects the two bodies standing opposite each other, as they are the only ones sharing the same soundscape. The soap will foam and change shape during the ritual and slowly dissolve. It all takes place nonverbally to enhance the physical encounter. Amplifying the ritual’s sound heightens the senses involved. The work examines the bodily transfer of control over a daily action that one often performs in their own intimate sphere.
